FORMER SAN MARTINO FOUNDRY

An industrial decommissioning project in Olginate, in the province of Lecco.
We completed the remediation and dismantling of the former San Martino Foundry, a historic production facility active from 1959 to 2014, in just six months.

The project included all the typical phases of a complex industrial reconversion, starting with the internal strip-out of residential, office, and industrial buildings, which involved the removal of systems, non-structural materials, and internal partitions.

This was followed by the environmental remediation, which covered more than 8,700 m² of asbestos-cement roofing, 720 m² of bituminous membrane containing asbestos, and insulating materials containing man-made vitreous fibers (MMVF), all treated with certified techniques and disposed of in accordance with regulations.

A particularly significant step was the demolition of the existing buildings, totaling a volume of 62,000 m³. Masonry and reinforced concrete structures were demolished using excavators equipped with hydraulic shears and crushers, while metal frameworks were dismantled with hydraulic shears, ensuring both material recovery and dust control at every stage.

Among the most complex operations were the remediation and removal of underground diesel tanks and the decommissioning of industrial systems, including the demolition of the furnace chimney, a symbol of the former plant, carried out with cranes and oxy-acetylene cutting.

A highly technical operation, conducted in full compliance with environmental and safety regulations, this project has returned a fully remediated area to the community.
