PIAZZA AMENDOLA

Redevelopment of a residential unit within a cultural heritage–protected building in the historic district of Piazza Giovanni Amendola in Milan

PIAZZA AMENDOLA

In the heart of Milan, in the historic district of Piazza Giovanni Amendola, a residential unit of 300 sqm has been redeveloped within a building protected by cultural heritage regulations. During World War II, the upper floors of the building were demolished and later rebuilt. Today, the units within the complex feature a spacious and articulated layout, and the intervention successfully combines historical prestige with the needs of contemporary living.

The project placed the preservation of the residence’s original identity at its core, starting from the historic walnut parquet flooring, enriched with refined inlays and decorative patterns, carefully protected throughout the entire construction process, to the plaster decorative elements of ceilings and doors.

In order to safeguard the wooden flooring and plaster ceilings in the living/study area, the distribution of building systems was designed to run along the ceiling exclusively in the central part of the home, corresponding to the corridor connecting the living and sleeping areas. Electrical and air conditioning systems were routed within the cavity of the new suspended ceiling in the corridor, avoiding any intervention on the flooring.

The conservation approach, required by the client and construction management, guided every design choice: from the window frames, faithfully reproduced based on historical drawings, to the restoration of internal doors and some plaster capitals, recovered in full respect of their original shapes and proportions.

Technological elements necessary for modern comfort, such as the ducted air conditioning system, were discreetly integrated without altering the balance of the spaces. The bathrooms were completely renovated, with a new layout and updated systems.

The spacious and bright kitchen is enhanced by the presence of a terrace of 100 sqm, enriched with planted flower boxes that further elevate the space.

The final result of the intervention is a refined dialogue between the recovery of historic Milanese architecture and modern functionality.
