MALPENSA TERMINAL 1
In the northern area of Terminal 1 – arrivals zone of Milan Malpensa Airport (VA), a project was launched to expand operational and commercial spaces, with work concentrated between the P9 and P10 parking levels.
The construction site, with a total duration of two months, included an initial demolition phase (approximately two weeks), followed by cutting and coring works on the existing structures. In particular, part of the prefabricated perimeter fascia of level P10 was demolished over a linear stretch of about 90 meters. This operation was carried out from the lower P9 level using a remotely controlled CAT 315 excavator, operated without an onboard driver, ensuring maximum safety and control.
Subsequently, demolition of the reinforced concrete infill walls related to the external enclosure wall (PAE) was carried out using the same equipment. The activities then continued with cutting and coring on the P9 slab, which had been предварительно shored, and finally with the demolition of isolated sections using a BROKK110 robot.
Throughout all operational phases, particular attention was given to the effects of falling debris on the levels below, as well as to dust management and containment through dedicated suppression systems. Additionally, due to the proximity to the customs area, a rubber barrier sheet was installed to prevent debris from spreading beyond authorized limits.
Operating within an active airport environment, demolition activities were carried out exclusively during nighttime hours to avoid interference with flight operations and to ensure the airport’s continuous functionality.
